Process Selected by Client: Design-Build

Project Description:

6500   SF. Covered Area

2000   SF. Semi-covered Area

13000 SF. Landscaping

12000 SF Parking, Rotonda, Etc.

Total estimated price: $3,000,000

The design process was based on the analysis of four categories which we believe to be fundamental to generate a proposal according to the needs of an inhabitant of the area.

TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY

Considering the climatic conditions of the place, the low relative humidity of the air in that area, own the mountain topography and environment program demand; It has been thought a House able to function like a machine bioclimatic with the ability to cool and humidify the air in the interior with the aim of creating conditions of thermal comfort.

This conditioning cycle is divided into four phases or stages:

-Inclusion of water:

The outdoor swimming pool, with its sculptural water source, and a second sector of swimming-pool partially covered, smaller, protected from sunlight, produce cooling and speed of fluid intake.

 -Translation of water:

A channel circulates water in direction related to the internal pedestrian movement.

 -Water filtration:

At the finish of the route, passing through a natural filter (waterfall) water is deposited in a reservoir located in the winter garden.

-Water re-circulation

Once filtered the water recirculates into the outdoor pool to start the cycle again.

IMPLEMENTATION AND NATURE

We understand the implementation as the moment in which the work rests on the existing terrain. The building assumes the slope of the ground as a camouflage of architecture with nature.

All main rooms of the House open southward orientation more favorable and expansions terraced adapting to the topographic conditions prevailing in this batch.

At the end of the project, a winter garden recreates an ecosystem dominated by vegetation and a water reservoir with translucent roof for natural light; a system such as solar control to adjust and adapt the conditions of the interior according to the schedule and time of year.

A lookout, on the highest point of the work, offers 360-degree panoramic views to see the city and the surrounding mountains throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

SPATIALITY AND FUNCTIONALITY

The formal language consists of the interaction of main volumes and volumes of smaller spaces that are defined because of this morphological relationship. These places provide different qualities including the possibility of circular, contemplate, or recreation.

Each volume contains one or more situations of use referred to in this housing program. The containment of the various uses is perpendicular to the axis of travel linked to the water course.

Pedestrian circulations act as backbone defining spatial interior and, consequently, the envelope of the building.

We understand the nerve center of the work as the organizing core of the whole project, where we locate the predominantly vertical circulation that connects the public areas with private. In the middle of this space develops as articulator of social activities. Wrapped by a spiral staircase as a sculptural element that moves towards a large space of contemplation, materialized in a terrace.

STRUCTURE AND MATERIALITY

From the structural, a grid of columns and beams generates a matrix which organizes all formal relations. In addition, in the interconnections of these elements arise virtual volumes, partially covered spaces and projections of light and shadow.

Total volumetric synthesis is constituted by the interaction of structural matrix, volumes and circulations.

The neutral color range emerges from the existing nature and dark tone is at odds as a projected shadow of the mountain. During the day, the black acts as a guard to glare and the evenings is camouflaged in the dark to appreciate the Majesty of the sky above the desert.
